STLH Sensory Garden
In 2024–2025 I led the design and volunteer delivery of a new sensory garden and outdoor learning space for Strength & Learning Through Horses, funded by the Hobson Charity.
The charity supports young people who are NEET, at risk of becoming NEET, or living with additional learning needs. The brief called for a safe, uplifting and wildlife‑rich space where beneficiaries and staff could learn, regroup and connect with nature.
My approach centred on accessible design, sensory planting, and ecological harmony—creating a space that feels both calming and quietly full of life.

Design Vision
A soothing design language guided the project from the start: soft paths, layered textures, plant groupings that invite touch, scent and curiosity.
Key Design Elements
-
Nine themed raised beds, each with its own sensory focus—colour, fragrance, texture, movement or wildlife habitat.
-
A willow dome as a living structure for shade, quiet reflection and playful exploration.
-
Native hedging to frame the space, increase biodiversity and create natural boundaries.
-
Accessible seating and wide pathways for ease of movement during sessions.
-
Bug hotels and habitat features to encourage pollinators and small wildlife.
-
Low‑maintenance planting chosen for year‑round interest and resilience.
